ACTIVE LEARNING through FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
Based on her latest book

Shirley’s new presentation focuses on ways in which formative assessment creates an active learning culture and a ‘growth mindset’ for both pupils and teachers. Drawing on the exciting findings from her UK action research learning teams, Shirley provides examples of cutting edge practice, showing how these link with popular approaches, such as thinking skills.  All are brought together in a coherent way, covering the central role of pupils in planning, creating success criteria, effective questioning, classroom talk, defining quality and continual self and peer assessment and marking.  Shirley also shares her model of action research, tailor-made for schools to set-up their own learning teams. Tackling school-based development of formative assessment through action research is the most powerful way of embedding the ethos, culture and practice of active learning.

NEW for 2011

UNDERSTANDING FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT -
ownership not mechanism

After years of increasingly formulaic approaches to lesson structure and the use of formative assessment, Shirley Clarke shows what is possible, regardless of continual changes and demands from policy makers:

  • A split-screen focus in lessons, so that thinking about learning muscles is as important as knowledge and skills
  • Teachers who use language that helps children develop a growth rather than a fixed mindset about their capacity to grow their own brain
  • Motivated learners who have helped plan lessons and activities and want to learn inside and outside the classroom
  • Teachers who stimulate children’s interest first, delaying the revealing of the learning objective
  • Children who decide what matters in their learning by generating their own success criteria through a variety of quick and simple strategies
  • Use of a visualiser to create an ethos of ongoing highlighting of success and improvement for all at any time, reducing pointless marking by teachers
  • Ways teachers have developed questioning which gets children talking and thinking

This new presentation includes many video examples from Shirley’s forthcoming DVD of teachers in action. The day is punctuated by discussion, tasks and reflection and includes a pack of useful materials.
